Quilt From Our Studio - Brown Tones

Posted by Christy Dillon on 20th Jun 2015

This is a quilt that was finished after a recent retreat! We used designs from four completely different pattern sets (Four Patch Star, Amish Feather, April Showers, and A Rose is A Rose) to complete this quilt. The beauty of this quilt is that all the patterns work together in a cohesive way.

We started by selecting the Four Patch feather for the star block, because that pattern was designed for exactly for that block. Next, we looked through our library for patterns that had complementary features, such as the Amish Feather for the triangle blocks. For the focus block, which was a simple square, we wanted to give a feeling of movement. In this case, we chose April Showers Block 1, which doesn't have feathers, but the large number of swirls adds great movement, drawing the eyes around the quilt to the next feature.

The A Rose is A Rose Swag makes a lovely addition to the quilt as the border. Everyone loves roses, as they have a beautiful shape which adds depth and dimension, while also featuring swirls, which complement the focus block April Showers.

To finish the small squares, we did some line work cross-hatching. This minimizes distraction and leads the eye to other parts of the quilt. When filling small areas, you should always strive to keep the quilting to a level of equality that brings a pleasing look to the overall finish of the quilt.

Overall, we were thrilled with how this quilt turned out and wanted to share it with you. We hope that this mix-and-match approach will give you some ideas of how our designs will work for you as well, adding excitement and variety to your projects.

We are always available to answer questions and give advice, so please feel free to contact us by phone or email if you could use some assistance in selecting a variety of complementary patterns for your next project.
